Sexual Assault Kit Initiative Leads to Arrests

Wisconsin’s Sexual Assault Kit Initiative has led to charges against another man – this time in the sexual assault of a teenager eighteen years ago. Jason Smith is facing two felony counts for the assault in Beloit back in 2000 – and is already serving time for other sexual assault convictions. The Department of Justice says DNA evidence from a previously untested kit matched Smith. Two other men also face charges in connection to the testing of the kits. Aaron Heidein was connected to a 2008 assault in Winnebago County, and Leroy Whittenberger is facing four counts in Waupaca County. The DOJ has sent the last batch of backlogged kits in for testing – and aims to have them completed by the end of this year.
