Sheboygan Man Flown to Hospital After Five-Vehicle Crash on Highway 23; Authorities Looking for At-Fault Driver

A 66-year-old Sheboygan man was flown to a hospital after a
crash involving five vehicles on Highway 23 in the Town of Empire just before
Noon on Saturday.

A press release from the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s
Office says the crash happened just east of Tower Road when a car being driven
east by an unknown person was attempting to pass several other vehicles that
were going east on the highway.

Reports say that while trying to pass, the driver encountered
a pickup truck being driven west and merged back into the eastbound lane of
traffic, hitting a car. That car then lost control, crossed the centerline, and
hit the pickup and another westbound car. The pickup then crossed the
centerline and hit what was described as a “military style transport vehicle”
that was going east.

The Sheboygan man driving the pickup was flown by helicopter
to Theda Care Regional Medical Center in Neenah with serious injuries. All
other people involved in the crash were not injured. Authorities say all people
identified were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Witnesses to the crash told deputies the driver of the
at-fault vehicle turned around and left the scene heading west on Highway 23 towards
the City of Fond du Lac.

The car is described as a white Chevy Malibu or Impala, or
a light silver Nissan sedan, while the driver was described as a Hispanic or African
American man with black hair. Authorities are still searching for the suspect
and vehicle at this time. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s
Office at 929-3390 or the Fond du Lac County Law Enforcement Tip Line at
906-4777.
