Smith Elementary in Oshkosh To Close

It’s becoming a sign of the times; an aging school
building is deemed too old to fix, and now must be closed. That was the decision
Wednesday night as the Oshkosh
School
board voted  7-0 to
close
Smith Elementary. Students will now transfer to Jefferson Elementary School.
A letter was also sent to families that the school board would discuss the future of the building. The letter stated that,
although the building is safe,  its long
term outlook looked bleak. According to the school district, repairs to fix the
school would have cost at least $3.7 million.
The School was built in
1895,  expanded in 1929 and had a gymnasium
and two classrooms added in 1996.
