Ledger Girls In Sectional Final

The St. Mary’s Springs girls basketball team advanced to the WIAA Division Four Sectional Final with a 45-38 win over Markesan on Thursday night in Beaver Dam. The Ledgers jumped out to a 16-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and held a 28-17 lead at the half.  The 3rd quarter belonged to the Hornets as they outscored SMSA 14-2 to take a 31-30 lead into the 4th quarter.  The young Ledgers owned the 4th quarter with a 15-7 advantage to earn the trip to the Sectional Final.  Kelli Schrauth led Springs with 15 points while Melanie Schneider added 14.  The win improves SMSA to 21-4 overall.  Markesan’s year ends at 19-5.  The Ledgers will travel to Hartland on Saturday for the Sectional Final against The Prairie School. All-Badgerland Conference Hockey Team

The Fond du Lac area was well represented on the Badgerland Conference Hockey Team this season.  Fond du Lac junior Michael Wilson was named the Player of the Year.  The 1st team forwards also included his teammate Jack Nejedlo and St. Mary’s Springs’ Conner Blank.  Fondy’s Charlie Blagoue was the 1st Team goalie.  Making the 2nd team on defense were Waupun’s Ryan Durant and St. Mary’s Springs’ Benton Deanovich. 

 

Badgers Fall In East Lansing

The Badger men’s basketball team shot just 29% and lost to Michigan State 58-43 in East Lansing on Thursday night.  The loss drops Wisconsin to 11-6 in Big Ten play.  They must beat Penn State this weekend and hope Indiana beat Michigan to finish in 4th place in the Big Ten. Ben Brust led UW with 10 points.

 

Cardinal Stritch At National Tournament

The Cardinal Stritch men’s basketball team advanced to the 2nd round of the NAIA Division Two National Tournament with a 74-56 win over Jamestown College on Thursday afternoon.  Laconia grad Derek Semenas had 19 points while Fondy native Tony Smit added 13.  The Wolves will play Bellevue, Nebraska today at 1:45pm in the 2nd round in Point Lookout, Missouri.

 

Stritch Women Advance

The Cardinal Stritch women’s team also advanced to the 2nd round of the National Tournament with a 66-60 win over Concordia-Nebraska.  Emily and Liz Neitzel each scored 10 for the Wolves.  The 2nd round game is this morning at 8:30am in Sioux City, Iowa.

 

Brewers Win

Khris Davis’ two run homer in the 8th lifted the Brewers to a 4-3 win over Arizona in Cactus League action on Thursday.  Alex Gonzalez also hit a two run homer for the Crew. Mark Rogers gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks in 3 innings worth of work on the hill.  The Brewers and Texas Rangers are scheduled to play this afternoon in Arizona but heavy rain is in the forecast.  If the skies stay clear coverage begins at 1:55pm on News-Talk 1450 KFIZ.

 

FDL Bears Home This Weekend

The Fond du Lac Bears return to home ice this weekend as they host pair of Great Lakes Hockey League (GLHL) games at the Blue Line Family Ice Center. The Bears hope the return to home ice will help as they push to make the GLHL League Tournament. Last weekend the Bears dropped a pair of GLHL game losing to the Madison Blues 10 to 8, and the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 6 to 3. On Friday evening the Bears will host the Calumet Wolverines in GLHL action with face-off scheduled for 8 pm. The Saturday contest will have the Bears hosting the Portage Lake Pioneers in another Great Lakes Hockey League play, face-off is scheduled for 8 pm.These games are two of the final three games of the season for the Bears. The Bears will finish the home part of their schedule next Saturday as they host the Vernon Hills Capitals with the scheduled face-off is 8 pm.
