UW-Milwaukee is heading to the NCAA
Tournament.  The Panthers picked up a
wire to wire 69-63 victory at Wright
State
in the Horizon
League Championship Game.  Randolph grad Kyle Kelm
had 20 points and 9 rebounds to pace UWM.
The Panthers will most likely be a #15 or #16 seed when the pairings are
released on Sunday night.

Gonzaga, North Dakota State, and Mount St. Mary also punched
their ticket to the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday night.

Cardinal Stritch
begins defense of its NAIA Division 2 National Championship on Wednesday in Branson,
Missouri
.  The Milwaukee
area school is the #1 seed heading into the seven day event despite a large
roster turnover from last season. Coming off of last year’s national
championship, 5th year coach Drew Diener had 9 new faces on his
roster to mesh around returning starters senior Derek Semenas
(Rosendale/UW-Green Bay) and junior Tony Smit (Fond du Lac).  Semenas averaged 24 points per game and was
the Chicagoland Colligate Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Smit (11.3
ppg/5.4 apg) was also a first team all-league choice.  The Wolves (29-4)  will play Northern
New Mexico
(16-15) in the first round at 12noon on
Wednesday.  Teams must win 5 games in 7
days to win the NAIA National Championship.

The Timberwolves beat the Bucks 112-101
last night.  Brandon Knight had 21 for
the Bucks who head to Atlanta
on Thursday night.

NFL free agency began on Tuesday and as
expected the Packers sat back and watched other teams around the league spend
big money on high priced free agents.
Former Bills safety Jarius Byrd was one of the big winners, inking a
6-year, $59 million dollar contract with New
Orleans
.  Packer
fans had hoped the team would go after a pair of defensive ends, but Oakland’s Lamarr Houston goes to the Bears and Baltimore’s Arthur Jones
signs with Indy.

 A
couple of high profile defensive ends were cut on Tuesday as the Bears cut
Julius Peppers and the Cowboys released Demarcus Ware.

The Packers did make a qualify offer to
linebacker Jamari Lattimore which means they can match any offer he gets from
another team.

The Brewers took a rare day off on
Tuesday.  They will get back at it this
afternoon as they take on the Angels in Cactus League play.  Coverage begins at 2:55pm on News-Talk 1450
KFIZ.

The WIAA Board of Controls announced a
couple of amendments to their constitution that will be up for vote by
membership on Monday night.  The most
controversial of the two will be to institute a multiplier to private schools
to determine what divisions they are placed in for post-season
tournaments.  The rule would multiply the
schools enrollment by 1.65 and that number would be used to place schools in a division.  Some public school’s, especially in small rural
communities feel they are at a disadvantage when they are matched with private
schools from large metropolitan areas who have similar enrollments.  If that passes it will will probably end up
in the courts.   The 2nd
amendment put conference affiliation back in control of the member schools and
out of the hands of the Board of Controls.
That mean’s the WIAA would no longer be in charge of determining what
conferences schools participate in.

The St. Mary’s Springs girls basketball
team will travel to Oshkosh North on Thursday night for a WIAA Division 4
Sectional Semifinal with Oshkosh Lourdes.
Coverage begins at 6:35pm with the Backyard Grill Pregame Show.  The tip is set for 7pm presented by BCI Burke
Company and Taco Bell.
