St Marys School Receives National Historical Designation

The St. Mary School in Fond du Lac was recently placed in the National Register of Historic Places.  Fond du Lac Community Development Director Dyann Benson says Commonwealth Development saw potential in turning the former St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Schools into multi-family housing. She says as part of making that development occur they needed the historic designation from state and federal officials to receive historic tax credits. Benson says St. Mary’s has a unique history. She it was like a teacher laboratory bringing in teachers from other areas and taught them how to be teachers in this community. She says St. Joseph’s School has already gotten state historic designation, but is waiting for national designation. St. Mary’s School Building was built in 1948 and 1949. It is considered an early post-war example of modernism used for a school building in the city.
