St. Mary’s Springs Academy Makes Top 25 Voucher List

The state Department of Public Instruction is out with the list of private schools that can accept voucher students this fall and St. Mary’s Spring Academy in Fond du Lac made the list of the top 25 schools. The school received 64 applicants. More than 2,400 hundred students applied to take part in the first year of the statewide voucher program. School Choice Wisconsin President Jim Bender says those numbers show there’s tremendous interest. Only 500 vouchers will be issued for this fall, with the top 25 schools receiving ten each. The remaining 250 will be divided among those schools using a lottery system. More than 2,000 applications were sent to just the top 25 schools. About 67-percent of the eligible students attended a private school last year. Bender believes that will change in the future. The cap during the 2014 school year will climb to 1,000 students, with enrollment starting early next year.
