State Supreme Court To Decide State Maps

Legislative and congressional redistricting is now in the hands of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. State Representative Mark Spreitzer hopes the conservative majority will consider the issue carefully.

“We‘ve certainly seen that Brian Hagedorn on the state Supreme Court has occasionally been willing to show some independence from his conservative colleagues. And so I hope that he will want to look at the law on redistricting and perhaps start from scratch. But in the process of doing that I hope that he looks at the public comments that have been submitted, both to the legislature and to the Peoples Maps Commission.”

The Beloit Democrat, who serves on the Assembly elections committee, says a federal court would likely produce fairer maps. But that three judge panel has deferred to the state court.
