The 2019 sturgeon spearing season is now in the books – as Sunday brought an end to the 16-day season on Lake Winnebago. 23 fish were harvested today – bringing the season total to 479 fish speared on Lake Winnebago, and the total to 786 fish for the entire system. Kraig Kelliher of Hartford had the largest fish of the final day of the season. He speared a 111.7 pound, 74 inch sturgeon that he registered at Wendt’s. The DNR tells us its the second time in three seasons Kelliher has speared a fish 100 pounds or larger. In the 2017 season, Kelliher speared a 140.5 pound – 76 inch long sturgeon. DNR Sturgeon Biologist Ryan Koenigs calls this year’s spearing season on Lake Winneabgo a success, despite variable water clarity between different areas of the lake.
