Day three of the sturgeon spearing season saw only 42 fish registered on the entire Winnebago System. 19 sturgeon were speared on the upriver lakes, with another 23 coming from Lake Winnebago itself. The season total now sits at 201 fish through the first three days of spearing. Four sturgeon weighed in at 100 pounds or more on Monday – two each from Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes. Matt Leitner of Chilton had the largest fish of the day – his sturgeon weighed in at 126.2 pounds and was just over 79 inches long. DNR Sturgeon Biologist Ryan Koenigs says the forecast snow storm has caused many spearers to pull their shanties off of the lakes.

Due to weather and slow registration numbers, the Quinney registration station has been closed until further notice. The DNR says the station will reopen this season – but anyone that was planning to register at Quinney should plan to register at Stockbridge or Pipe for the time being.
