Testing Continues on Dead Fish

It could be a few more weeks before we learn more about the cause behind a fish die-off in Lake Winnebago. On May third, the DNR confirmed testing pointed to a large outbreak of Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia – a virus that affects many species of fish, but not humans. VHS first appeared in the lake back in 2006. Despite knowing the cause, piles of dead fish are still visible along many shorelines of Lake Winnebago – and fishermen are continuing to ask questions. The DNR says further testing is underway, but they hope to have more answers by the middle of this month. They add that the virus has mainly affected sheepshead so far, and there is no indication that it will impact game fish.
