Time For Turf At Fondy High School

The Fond du Lac School Board voted Monday to approve the addition of a turf field at Fond du Lac High School.

Board President Mark Jurgella said the total cost of the project could range between $4.4 and $5.3 million, depending on what additions are included with the field.

Jurgella said the field will not be used just for football, but also for soccer, gym class, marching band and “whatever other uses we make for it.”

A large portion of the funding needed to complete the project is already on hand, with a substantial amount in the District Fund Balance.

Board member Rick Gedemer said a project of this size needs to be approved by the public, and should be taken to referendum, while Dr. Susan Jones said the turf field will serve too few district students, and that more students need more than just a turf field to succeed once they graduate.

In the end, the board approved the measure by a 5-2 vote, with Jones and Gedemer in opposition.

Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Fleig said he will look to bring tentative plans and a timeline back to the board ideally in February.
