Trooper Casper Memorial Dedication Saturday

An impromptu memorial in Fond du Lac for a state trooper killed in a shootout with a bank robbery and murder suspect will become permanent this weekend. Forest Plaza property manager Terry Gallant says shortly after the fatal shootout in March of 2015 an impromptu tribute to Trooper Trevor Casper sprang up just east of the Johnson Street Pick ‘n Save, near the site he was killed. She says flowers, candles, teddy bears and plaques were left near a tree. She says it is well maintained and still there today. Gallant says about six months later Pick ‘n Save employees decided to donate money towards a memorial bench. A year later both Pick ‘n Save stores in Fond du Lac held a fundraiser in which law enforcement officers bagged groceries for donations to the memorial. More than $10,000 was raised. She says what started as a memorial bench has grown with contributions by local construction and concrete companies, landscapers, and stone companies. She says there is now a concrete pad for the bench and a memorial garden. Saturday the memorial will be dedicated during a noon ceremony that will include an honor guard, speeches, the unveiling of the memorial and a fly over by a Flight for Life helicopter. The public is welcome to attend. This is Police Week in Fond du Lac.
