Utility Scam

Wisconsin’s Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection issued an alert Thursday about scammers posing as employees of We Energies. Frank Frassetto of the Department says scammers are calling businesses and informing them they are behind in utility payments. They tell the businesses unless they wire the money their utilities are going to be shut off. He says We Energies also got calls from worried customers. Frassetto says there is a possibility customers of other utilities could get hit with similar scams. He says utility companies will contact you by mail if your account is overdue. He also says if a caller demands a utility payment by prepaid debit card or wire transfer, it is a scam.
