Waupun Man Charged in Beating Death of his Grandmother

A Waupun man is being held in the Fond du Lac County Jail on
a $1 million-dollar cash bond after being charged in the beating death of his
grandmother.

Gregory Spittel faces several felony charges, including first-degree
intentional homicide, first-degree reckless injury, first-degree recklessly
endangering safety and two counts of aggravated battery – in addition to
several misdemeanors.

According to a criminal complaint, police responded to a
home in Waupun on August 24th where Spittel’s grandmother was found
unconscious in the basement. The woman had suffered a head injury and was
ultimately transported to Waupun Memorial Hospital, then to ThedaCare Medical
Center in Neenah, where she died four days later. Officers said Spittel was
drunk and had destroyed numerous items in the home. Police had to use a taser
to bring him into custody after he threw things at officers – including a bottle
of alcohol.

A preliminary hearing for the 30-year-old is set for January
2nd. If convicted on the first-degree intentional homicide charge,
he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
