Wisconsin Has Its First Case Of Zika Virus

Wisconsin has its first Zika virus case, but Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller says people should bear in mind that person didn’t contract it in the state. She says the infected person got it during a visit to Honduras an area known to have the virus. She says current cases in the U.S. involve people who have traveled to affected areas, but none where someone got infected by being bitten by a mosquito in the U.S. She says the mosquitoes here in the state don’t carry the Zika virus but they have been known to carry the West Nile virus. She says the Zika virus presents a bigger problem for pregnant women or women who want to carry a baby because the virus can cause brain development issues in the fetus. The disease can also be sexually transmitted by someone who is carrying the virus.
