WPS Warns Customers of Scam

Wisconsin Public Service is asking customers to be wary of phone calls demanding them to pay a false debt. The utility company says since Wednesday, there have been more than sixty reports of callers claiming to be from WPS trying to get money from customers.

A majority of those calls were reported in the Crivitz and Wausau areas – but can happen around the state. In some cases, the callers even play a recording of the WPS customer service greeting on a callback number given to customers.

The company reminds people they do not require prepaid cards to pay energy bills and do not use threatening tones with customers over the phone. They also remind people to never provide banking, account, or private information over the phone. If you receive a suspicious call, WPS says you should hang up and report the incident to the utility.
