Zacherl Family Donates to FDL Sheriff’s Office for Purchase of Ice Rescue Kits

Turning a tragedy into a positive. That’s what the Zacherl
Family of Fond du Lac has done, after presenting a donation to the Fond du Lac
County Sheriff’s Office to fund the purchase of new Ice and Water Rescue Kits that
will be readily available to members of the department.

The donation was made in the name of Peter Zacherl, who died
January 21st after falling through the ice on Lake Winnebago while
riding on an ATV. Jenny – Peter’s husband – and their children Dan and Claire
presented the donation to Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt on Wednesday.

A news release says after learning about how ice rescue
calls have become more frequent in the county and the need to ensure safer
rescue practices, the family committed $5,000 from a memorial fund established
in Peter’s name at the Fond du Lac Area Foundation toward funding the kits.

The kits include a carrying case, ice picks, traction
cleats, throwable rescue rope and a rescue flotation device. As a result of the
donation, 25 kits will be funded, and will be in every squad car – including administrator,
supervisor, patrol, school resource, detective, civil process and the
department pickup truck.
